Helldivers 2 is suffering from this, as well. Developer Arrowhead brag about their gun designers having done military service, in a game with pure fictional guns. It's how you end up with not wanting to add more rounds to a machinegun because they wouldn't fit in the ammo drum, or not wanting to implement a man-portable gatling gun because the the recoil would be unmanageable. This in a game with laser weapons and quasar weapons and energy shields. So the plasma guns get away with Star Wars greeblies and blue glowy goo, but the slugthrower machinegun has to conform to Cold War era firearms.

I've been someone fascinated with the engineering and mechanics of guns since I was a kid. They are at once incredible complex and intricate while being incredible crude. Their mechanisms just tickle my brain in a way few other machines can. But trying to emulate their actual use in a video game seems like an exercise in frustration and misery. There's already such a layer of abstraction with the fact that you're taking control of someone who, in most cases, has the rote muscle memory to operate these devices naturally and at super human speeds most times. The time it takes to study the treatises on operating these things at that level insane. Taking shortcuts in animation and function just seem like one extra step further in the direction of making it fun and I've never understood the backlash to it. I mean, I understand people being wads about accuracy to the point of inaccuracy but it's still just boggles my mind how people can live that way. One of my favourite shooters that tried something new with gun control is Receiver by Wolfire Games. They just seemed to have fun with the concept of actually emulating the clunky endeavor of learning to operate a firearm.
